Research on Content pages (NME & Kerrang)

Compare and contrast the content pages of NME and Kerrang

NME (new musical express) has 3 separate sections which are made up of 7 columns. The content is split in different sections which makes it easier to see for the audience and the arrows tell you exactly where to find the gossip from the front cover.
The image is the selling point for the magazine and our eyes immediately are drawn to the image as it is the only main image on the content page.
Moreover the language used is very unique as we don’t understand it therefore it shows that the magazine is for a niche market. It is informal language as it is very chatty and as if they are trying to make a conversation with the audience. They also use rhetorical questions to get the audience involved. As you can see the magazine is using different techniques to draw the audience into buying the magazine. Command words are also used
“subscribe” this of which is an imperative and is telling the audience what to do. Also the fact that it is “just £5.95” makes the product sound cheap and as if you are getting more for your money. They also use alliteration “spiritualized sonic spaceman” this sounds poetic and by using long words it connotes that the magazine is for people who are quiet educated. “dead rats….prostitutes” makes the audience want to see how the crystal castles were related to the line and it almost like they have opened their heart to NME and they are the only magazines that know this secret. The colours used are red, black, white and yellow and they use no more than 4 colours this of which follows the convections of a content page and as they have used primary colours it reflects the front colour.

On the other hand Kerrang has more images therefore it is more visual this connotes that the target audience are less educated. The language used is very informal and they use rude words “cock” which is also sexually suggestive. This magazine has more of rebellious theme “swag” as if they have stolen something. Also “Paul” the editor has signed this magazine the fact that he has only used this first name suggest that he is trying to make friend with the audience.
The colours used are black and yellow these colours could connote a bee as they can sting and they are dangerous which connotes that the target audience are dangerous.
